Dr. Xi Chen is a research scientist in the Moore Lab here at Van Andel Institute, and a consistent volunteer at VAI events since 2016. She has lent a hand at many of our fall events, including Pure Barre on the Blue Bridge, Couture for a Cure and Hope on the Hill. We are so appreciative of her willingness to get involved and the unique perspective she brings to every volunteer opportunity as an Institute scientist.
Chen is driven to volunteer with Van Andel Institute Purple Community in honor of loved ones who have lived with cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. She believes in the importance of working hard both within the lab and in the community to promote hope for those affected by diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s. We see her hard work every day in the lab and at every volunteer event!
She also loves to volunteer for events that involve art or fitness; Painting Night for Parkinson’s Research, Brushes with Benefits and Pure Barre on the Blue Bridge are her favorites. She is always eager to engage with philanthropic sponsors and fellow volunteers to share stories and 100% hope.
To anyone thinking about volunteering, Chen encourages taking the plunge and signing up. “Purple Community makes fundraising events fun,” she said. “Anyone can register to volunteer, and I can’t reiterate enough how rewarding and important it is to give back to your community.”
Chen will gladly tell you that each Van Andel Institute Purple Community event is a unique and gratifying experience, and it truly does make a difference in the fight against cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
