PC5K Generates Large Crowds

Posted By

From superheroes to pink flamingos, over 350 runners and walkers gathered together at the Mary Free Bed YMCA, on Saturday, April 29, to join us in the fight against cancer, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases! The Purple Community 5K was a success with over $40,000 raised to support biomedical research at Van Andel Institute.

Fundraising Teams and Individuals
Top individual fundraisers donned Purple Community capes as they ran the course. These “superheroes” are individuals that went above and beyond their call to raise funds for cancer and Parkinson’s research. Top individuals include Megan Kansier from Michigan Paving & Materials, and Hannah Geelhoed from BSI Healthcare Services.

Michigan Paving & Materials, Peirces Fighting Parkinson’s, Community Transition Campus and the Fearless Flamingos were among the top fundraising teams. Thank you for your incredible efforts!

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — this event would not have been possible without our incredible sponsors. Thank you for fundraising, providing volunteers, assisting with race day logistics and so much more!

Over 50 volunteers committed their time to the Purple Community 5K! Packet pick up, course marshals, and so many more positions were filled by individuals from around West Michigan. We cannot thank you enough for your help and dedication to bringing hope to our community!

We particularly want to thank the cheer station teams who rang cowbells, cheered and encouraged the 5K participants. The premier percussion ensemble, Strike, kept our runners going at the mid-point of the course. Superheroes, such as Spiderman, Deadpool and Super Girl, from the Cosplay Crusaders cheered on runners in the last leg of the race.

What’s next for #TeamHOPE?
This isn’t the end for #TeamHOPE! If you missed the Purple Community 5K, you can still help raise awareness, celebrate those living with cancer or Parkinson’s disease and honor those that have passed by running with Team Hope in the Fifth Third River Bank Run. The commitment is simple — raise $100 by race day and take advantage of various team perks. You will have access to training, an energized group of supporters and 100% of every dollar you fundraise will directly support research happening at Van Andel Institute.
