Running a marathon is an incredible undertaking in and of itself and requires a tremendous amount of physical and mental endurance and motivation. Why not give yourself an added boost of motivation by running in honor or memory of someone in your life that who has faced a cancer or Parkinson’s disease journey?
When you sign up to run with Purple Community Team Hope on behalf of Van Andel Institute (VAI), we will be with you every step of the way! You will have access to fitness training, an amazing team of supporters and the best part? 100% of every dollar you raise will go directly to cancer and Parkinson’s disease research happening at VAI.
The TCS New York City Marathon has provided Team Hope with at least FIVE entries for the race. Because of the limited quantity of entries we have available, we will be accepting applications beginning in February 2018 and will notify participants of their selection status after February 28, 2018.
If you apply to run for Purple Community Team Hope to obtain a guaranteed charity entry, your fundraising minimum will be $2,500. Additionally, runners with a guaranteed entry secured on their own may join our team at any time for a $500 fundraising minimum commitment.
There are several different ways to register with Purple Community Team Hope. Please read the registration information below for more details.
If you secured your own entry through the drawing period and would like to join Team Hope, you can do so by visiting https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/van-andel-institute-nyc-2018 and selecting the $500 fundraising minimum option.
NOTE: Purple Community has the ability to lobby for more guaranteed entries. If you are not selected for the first round of 5 spots available, we will be lobbying for additional spots through the marathon team and through other charity partners that wish to sell their extra spots. We will work through a wait list process for those interested in one of these additional spots on the team.
NOTE: You must provide credit card information on both the Purple Community Team Hope site and the NYC Marathon site. You WILL NOT be charged anything, however this is a requirement to join. Purple Community is covering the cost for the NYC Marathon entry for you ($295 savings)!

Athletes who wish to bypass the TCS New York City Marathon registration process and secure a guaranteed entry may join Purple Community Team Hope. All participating runners will need to be invited and register for the TCS New York City Marathon through My NYRR by 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, September 13, 2018.
If you choose to guarantee your entry into the race by joining Purple Community Team Hope, you are committing to a required and enforced fundraising minimum of $2,500 for Van Andel Institute by the deadline of October 30, 2018. If this minimum is not met, you will be charged the full amount to the credit card you provided, and/or not permitted to participate in the TCS New York City Marathon at Purple Community’s discretion.
Please note that this type of guaranteed entry is available on a first come, first serve basis. There is no cancellation or deferment policy for this type of registration, and the $2,500 fundraising commitment is non-reversible. Purple Community Team Hope members still need to complete their registration with the TCS New York City Marathon after they register with Purple Community.
A link to officially register for the marathon will be sent to you shortly after you join Purple Community Team Hope. The marathon registration (covered by Purple Community) will be invoiced to Purple Community at the standard $255 (U.S. Residents; NYRR Members) / $295 (U.S. Residents; Non NYRR Members) / $358 (residents outside of the U.S.) registration fee for entry.
If at any time during your training you become injured or are otherwise unable to participate in the event due to extreme circumstances, you are still held to your fundraising minimum. If you withdraw prior to August 1, 2018 and are able to find a valid replacement runner approved by Purple Community, you will be released from your fundraising minimum and only held accountable for a $75 registration transfer fee. If you elect to DEFER your entry to 2019, you may do so, without penalty, if you have achieved your fundraising minimum in the 2018 season. Runner will be responsible for covering 2019 race registration fees.
Athletes who secured their own entry into the NYC Marathon are highly encouraged to join Purple Community Team Hope through this registration type. The required fundraising commitment for Purple Community Team Hope with a “self-secured standard registration” for the marathon is $500.
For either of these registration methods, if you would like to participate in a marathon training program, Purple Community will cover this cost, if you agree to an additional $250 fundraising minimum added to either level (total of $2,750 for those using a guaranteed charity entry or $750 for individuals who have secured their own entry must be raised to receive complimentary training).
