On January 27, Grand Valley State University D3 Hockey fought cancer for the third year. Cancer has impacted all of the players in different ways and they are incredibly passionate about raising funds to support research at Van Andel Institute.
Senior Alex Bjork started this fundraising game three years ago, after losing his grandfather to cancer. “I think everyone has a personal tie to the event. We all know someone that has been touched by cancer,” Bjork said.
The team played their hearts out while wearing custom purple jerseys. Each jersey had a name stitched on the back representing someone who has been affected by cancer — those who had lost their life, someone currently battling, or someone who is now cancer free. The team proudly played in honor of them.
The event featured a special ceremonial puck drop with Anna Walz, marketing professor at GVSU. Anna is currently battling breast cancer and is a mother of five. We are in awe of her strength and appreciate her support of Purple Community — YOU are the reason we do what we do every day!
We cannot put into words how much we appreciate communities like GVSU who take the time to support Purple Community. It means so much too so many.
