Five Years of Fighting Cancer with the Griffins

On Friday, February 19, Van Andel Arena took on a new color as the Grand Rapids Griffins traded in their navy blue and red to go purple. We’re thrilled to have such a great partnership with the Griffins and to have had our 5th annual Purple Game!

During the pregame, the purple-cladded Griffins were joined by Afton DeVos, a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Survivor, her husband, Aaron, and their two sons, Zachary and Colton for a ceremonial puck drop in honor of her cancer journey and for everyone that is affected by this disease. Thank you for being a part of the night Afton!

We’d like to also thank our longtime friend, Maranda (from WOTV 4), for being a special part of the night. Maranda led an emotional salute to survivors during the first intermission that reminded all of us just how much we’ve been affected by cancer.

The best part of night? The crowd of nearly 10,000 people helped raise more than $25,000! We’re happy to say that every dollar will stay here in West Michigan and will help fund cancer research at Van Andel Institute.

If you missed the jersey auction at the end of the night, or didn’t see one that you really wanted, a limited number of additional game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off on eBay. The Griffins will be posting them soon. Check the link frequently to be sure you don’t miss out!

Thank you the Grand Rapids Griffins, and all the hockey fans, for an extraordinary evening and a wonderful partnership for the past 5 years!
