On the beautiful morning of Saturday, August 6, Purple Community took “Go Purple” to the next level at the Grand Rapids Color Run, as both runners and volunteers became caked head-to-toe in purple.

Because of the Purple Community’s partnership with The Color Run, the Purple Zone is unique to the Grand Rapids Race. Our zone was on Division right outside of the Van Andel Institute, and was the first zone for the runners to get painted. Accordingly, the racers were especially eager to turn their white t-shirts purple, the color that embodies awareness for all types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, the event was a sure success. We had over 30 volunteers who helped with everything from checking runners in before the race, to making the Purple Zone a party and ensuring that every runner was covered in purple.

Also we greatly appreciated the support from The Color Run staff. Our captain helped us efficiently set up our zone, and the whole staff assisted with a speedy clean-up.

Thanks to The Color Run for your partnership. It was a pleasure to spread awareness about the Van Andel Institute’s remarkable research at the “Happiest 5K on the Planet!”
